Key takeaways

  • High gloss film typically measures above about 80 gloss units at 60°, satin roughly 20–50 and matte below about 10.
  • Satin black hides surface flaws better than gloss black and wipes clean more easily than matte black.
  • Chrome vinyl uses a vacuum-metallized mirror layer, so it scratches easily and works best on flat, low-touch surfaces.
  • Thermofoil cabinet doors are MDF covered with factory vacuum-pressed PVC foil, which is effectively factory-applied vinyl wrap.
  • Reflective vinyl uses glass beads or microprisms to return light to its source, making signs and markings visible at night.

Vinyl wrap finishes describe how a self-adhesive film's surface reflects light: gloss is mirror-like, satin is a soft sheen, matte is flat, and metallic, chrome, pearlescent, color shift, carbon fiber, glitter and reflective films add special effects. On furniture, cabinets, appliances and signs, the finish affects how fingerprints, scratches and surface flaws show as much as the color does.

Many of these finish names come from the vehicle-wrap world, but the same looks are widely used indoors. This guide explains each finish for interior, furniture, appliance, craft and sign applications. It does not cover vehicle paint wraps, which need films rated and tested specifically for automotive use.

What vinyl wrap finishes are there?

Gloss level is measured in gloss units (GU) with a gloss meter, usually at a 60° angle. As a rule of thumb, high gloss is above about 80 GU, satin roughly 20–50 GU and matte below about 10 GU. Special-effect films add pigments, metal layers or textures on top of that base.

Satin black wrap vs matte black: what is the difference?

Black vinyl is the best-selling color in almost every film category, so this is the most common finish question. Matte black wrap has almost no sheen and reads as a deep, flat black; satin black wrap has a soft low sheen that shows the shape of a surface without the mirror effect of gloss black vinyl wrap.

  • Matte black vinyl wrap (sometimes sold as flat black vinyl wrap) hides small dents and uneven paint best, but oils from hands can leave darker patches, so it suits doors and panels that are not handled constantly.
  • Satin black vinyl wrap is the practical compromise: it wipes clean more easily than matte and is less fussy about surface flaws than gloss. The same reasoning applies to satin grey wrap, satin white wrap and satin blue wrap.
  • Gloss black vinyl wrap looks like piano lacquer but shows fingerprints, dust and every imperfection in the surface beneath. Preparation has to be perfect.

Indoors, black vinyl wrap for wood furniture, black appliance fronts and shop fittings are common uses. Black vinyl wrap is also used as chrome delete vinyl on furniture, fixtures and appliances: applying vinyl wrap for chrome trim lets you cover shiny chrome or stainless strips with satin or matte black film. Black vinyl sheet and black vinyl roll stock, plus narrow black vinyl tape, are used for pinstripes, edging and sign borders.

Matte vinyl wrap finishes and colors

Matte vinyl texture is created by a micro-rough top surface or a matte top coat that scatters light. Matte vinyl wrap is popular on kitchen cabinets and wall panels because it looks like a painted finish and hides the small undulations of MDF doors.

Popular matte colors indoors include matte white vinyl wrap and matte black vinyl; matte grey wrap and matte dark gray wrap for modern kitchens; matte green vinyl wrap and matte blue vinyl wrap for statement cabinets and islands; matte red vinyl wrap for retail fixtures; and warm neutrals such as matte desert sand vinyl wrap or matte tan wrap and matte brown wrap. Our furniture decorative films come in matte, high-gloss and embossed solid colors at 0.5 mm thickness on 1.22 m × 50 m rolls.

Matte sticker paper and matte contact paper

In crafts and printing, matte sticker paper and matte vinyl sticker paper are printable films with a non-glare surface that is easy to write on and photographs without hot spots. Matte white sticker paper is the standard for product labels. Clear matte contact paper and matte black contact paper are used to protect or cover shelves, books and drawer fronts. For cut lettering and decals, matte cutting vinyl gives a low-sheen, painted look on walls and glass; see our glossy and matte cutting vinyl in 0.61 m and 1.22 m widths.

Gloss and high-gloss vinyl wrap

Gloss wrap gives the deepest, richest color, which is why gloss white vinyl wrap and gloss black vinyl wrap dominate handle-less modern kitchens. High gloss vinyl wrap is also the closest a film gets to a glossy laminate countertop or lacquered furniture.

How to choose glossy white adhesive vinyl for kitchen cabinets

  1. Choose thickness. Prefer 0.3–0.5 mm film; thin glossy film shows every dent and grain line beneath.
  2. Check the white. Whites vary from cool blue-white to warm ivory. Compare samples against your countertop and walls in daylight.
  3. Look for an anti-scratch top coat, because gloss scratches show more than matte.
  4. Plan for edges. Gloss film must be wrapped around door edges; a cut edge on the face is very visible.
  5. Prepare perfectly. Fill and sand every chip and remove all dust; gloss magnifies imperfections.

For stickers and labels, glossy vinyl sticker paper, glossy printable vinyl and waterproof glossy sticker paper give bright, saturated colors. Clear glossy sticker paper lets the surface show through. Glossy contact paper is the low-cost option for shelves and craft projects.

Metallic, chrome and pearlescent finishes

Metallic vinyl contains fine metal or mica flakes in a colored layer, giving soft sparkle: metallic silver vinyl, metallic gold vinyl, metallic blue, metallic grey, metallic green and metallic red. "Soft metallic" and brushed metallic films add a directional grain like brushed steel or aluminum, popular on appliance fronts and retail fixtures.

Chrome vinyl has a vacuum-metallized layer that reflects like a mirror. Mirror chrome vinyl wrap and silver chrome wrap suit lettering, trim accents and display signage; black chrome wrap, dark chrome, red chrome, blue chrome and green chrome tint the mirror effect. Satin chrome wrap softens it to a brushed-metal glow. Chrome films are stiff and scratch easily, so they are best on flat surfaces and low-touch areas.

Gold leaf vinyl, gold foil vinyl and gold adhesive vinyl are used for lettering on glass doors, signage and furniture accents. Silver contact paper and silver metallic contact paper are used on shelves and as decorative backsplash covers. In kitchens, metallic backsplash tiles peel stick products are usually aluminum foil laminates rather than vinyl alone; our oil-proof aluminum foil kitchen sticker is one example.

Pearlescent wrap (pearl white wrap, black pearl, pearlescent white vinyl wrap) contains interference pigments that give a soft, shifting shimmer. Pearl white vinyl is a favorite for wardrobes, hotel furniture and kitchen cabinets because it looks richer than flat white. Our high-gloss pearlescent decorative film is 120 micron PVC in ivory white, champagne, gold and other colors.

Color shift, chameleon and iridescent vinyl

Color shift vinyl (also called chameleon vinyl or color changing vinyl wrap) uses multilayer interference pigments so the color changes as you move around the object: purple to green, blue to black, black to red. Iridescent vinyl wrap is a related, usually lighter effect with a rainbow sheen. Indoors, color shift wrap is used on gaming desks, PC cases, retail display plinths, event stands and decals. Because the effect depends on viewing angle, it looks best on curved or angled surfaces rather than large flat walls.

Carbon fiber, camo and textured vinyl

Carbon fiber vinyl is printed and embossed to imitate woven carbon fiber composite. It is not real carbon fiber; real carbon fiber wrap material is a resin-impregnated fabric, not a peel-and-stick film. Gloss carbon fiber has a clear-coat look; matte carbon fiber is more subtle. The most realistic carbon fiber vinyl wrap has a genuine 3D texture you can feel, not just a flat print. Indoors it is used on desks, laptop skins, speaker boxes, appliance panels and tool chests.

Camo vinyl (camouflage vinyl) and topo vinyl (topographic map patterns) are printed films used on gun safes and cabinets, hunting gear, outdoor equipment cases, coolers and themed furniture. Matte camo finishes avoid glare.

Wood effect vinyl and wood grain stick on vinyl, plus black textured vinyl, are embossed films that add a tactile surface to furniture, doors and wall panels.

Glitter and reflective vinyl

Glitter wrap and glitter vinyl wrap embed sparkling flakes in the film; black glitter vinyl wrap and sparkly black vinyl are popular for event furniture, bars and feature walls. For larger areas, glitter wallpaper is easier to hang: our gold and silver glitter wallpapers are 0.12 mm PVC on 1.22 m × 50 m rolls.

Reflective vinyl contains glass beads or microprisms that send light back toward its source, so it glows in headlights or flashlight beams while looking ordinary in daylight. Reflective sign vinyl, reflective vinyl decals and reflective vinyl stickers are used for safety marking, house numbers, doorways, stair edges, equipment and wayfinding. White reflective vinyl, silver reflective vinyl and black reflective vinyl are the most common colors; printable reflective vinyl can be printed with solvent or UV inks. Signs that must meet traffic or safety regulations need certified reflective sheeting, so check local requirements. For sign shops, our guide to sign vinyl and sign-making materials covers the wider range.

Thermofoil cabinets vs vinyl wrap vs solid wood doors

Thermofoil cabinets are MDF doors covered with a thin PVC foil that is heated and vacuum-pressed onto the door at the factory. Thermofoil cabinet doors and thermofoil kitchen cabinets, often white thermofoil shaker cabinet doors, are effectively factory-applied vinyl wrap. Foil wrapped cabinets are smooth and easy to clean, but the foil can peel near ovens and kettles over time.

Self-adhesive vinyl wrapPVC film applied on site with PSAModerate; keep away from ventsRe-wrap the single door
Solid wood cabinet doorsSolid timber frame and panelGoodSand and refinish

When thermofoil starts peeling, the choice is between custom thermofoil or finished wood cabinet door replacements, or stripping the loose foil and wrapping the existing doors with self-adhesive film. Solid wood kitchen cabinet doors, including solid oak cabinet doors and solid wood raised panel doors, can also be wrapped, but the profile must be simple enough for the film to follow. Wrapping is also a popular way to update kitchens with golden oak cabinets without painting. Compare costs in our guide to cabinet refacing vs replacing vs wrapping.

Choosing a finish for trade orders

Retailers and installers usually stock a core range of finishes and add special effects later. A practical starting mix is white, black and grey in both matte and gloss, two or three wood grains, one marble, and one pearlescent or metallic. Order samples of each finish and test them on the real substrate, because the same color looks different in matte and gloss. We supply decorative and cutting vinyl in glossy, matte, embossed and pearlescent finishes, with custom color matching from 100 rolls.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the difference between satin black and matte black vinyl wrap?

Matte black vinyl wrap has almost no sheen and looks flat and deep, while satin black has a soft low sheen that shows the shape of a surface without mirror reflections. Satin wipes clean more easily and shows fewer hand marks than matte, and it hides surface flaws far better than gloss black, making it a practical middle choice.

Is matte or gloss vinyl better for kitchen cabinets?

Matte vinyl is more forgiving on kitchen cabinets because it hides dents, scratches and uneven MDF, and it looks like a painted finish. Gloss vinyl gives a deeper, modern lacquer look but shows fingerprints and every flaw beneath it, so it needs thicker film and perfect preparation. Satin finishes sit in between and suit most busy family kitchens.

What is chrome vinyl used for?

Chrome vinyl is a mirror-finish film with a vacuum-metallized layer. Indoors and in signage it is used for lettering, logos, display signs, trim accents and event decoration. It is stiffer and scratches more easily than standard vinyl, so it works best on flat, low-touch surfaces. Tinted versions such as black, red and blue chrome are also available.

Is carbon fiber vinyl real carbon fiber?

No. Carbon fiber vinyl is a PVC film printed and usually embossed to imitate the woven look of carbon fiber composite. Real carbon fiber is a resin-impregnated fabric that is laminated and cured, not a peel-and-stick film. Good carbon fiber vinyl has a raised 3D texture you can feel, which makes it look far more realistic than a flat print.

What are thermofoil cabinets?

Thermofoil cabinets have doors made from MDF covered with a thin PVC foil that is heated and vacuum-pressed onto the door at the factory. They are smooth, affordable and easy to clean, often in white shaker styles. The foil can peel near ovens and kettles over time, after which doors are usually replaced or re-covered with self-adhesive vinyl film.

How does reflective vinyl work?

Reflective vinyl contains tiny glass beads or microprisms that return light directly back toward its source. In daylight it looks like ordinary colored vinyl, but in headlights or a flashlight beam it appears to glow. It is used for safety marking, house numbers, signs and night-visible decals. Regulated road and safety signs require certified reflective sheeting.

How much does a matte black wrap cost?

For furniture, cabinets and appliances, a matte black wrap is usually one of the lowest-cost ways to change a surface, because the main costs are film area and labor rather than the finish itself. Matte, satin and gloss solid colors are normally priced similarly, while chrome, color shift and textured films typically cost more per square meter.
