Key takeaways

  • Faux brick wall panels have real molded relief, so they look more convincing up close than flat or lightly embossed brick wallpaper.
  • A 4x8 ft faux brick panel covers 32 sq ft (about 3 m²) per sheet but leaves a vertical seam every 4 ft that must be hidden.
  • Peel and stick brick wallpaper is usually the lowest-cost option and removable grades peel off without damaging painted drywall.
  • Only exterior-rated polyurethane, fiber cement or UV-stabilized PVC panels, or thin brick veneer, should be used on outside walls.
  • White and grey brick designs look most realistic in wallpaper because real painted brick has little color variation between bricks.

Faux brick wall panels are rigid sheets, usually hardboard, PVC or polyurethane, molded or printed to look like brickwork, while brick wallpaper is a thin printed or embossed roll covering. Panels give deeper, more convincing texture and suit exterior or high-wear walls; peel-and-stick brick wallpaper costs less, installs faster and removes cleanly, so it suits rentals and accent walls.

Which one looks more real depends on how close people stand to the wall, the lighting, and how well the seams are handled. This guide compares the main types of imitation wall bricks, explains where each works, and shows how to install a brick accent wall that does not look fake.

What are faux brick wall panels?

A faux brick panel is any pre-made sheet that reproduces the face of a brick wall without real masonry. The term covers several very different products, and the material decides both the realism and where you can use it.

TypeTypical sizeTypical depthRealism up closeBest use
Hardboard / MDF brick paneling 4x84 × 8 ft (1.22 × 2.44 m)1/8–1/4 in (3–6 mm), shallow embossingModerate; repeat visibleBasements, garages, budget interior walls
Faux brick plastic panels (PVC)Often 2 × 4 ft or 4 × 8 ftMolded relief, 1/4–1/2 inGood from 2 m awayInterior walls, some exterior skirting

Among brick wall paneling formats, faux brick wall panels 4x8 are the most searched because one sheet covers 32 sq ft (about 3 m²) and nails or glues straight onto studs or drywall. The trade-off is the long vertical seam every 4 ft, which you must hide with careful brick-pattern alignment or vertical trim.

What is brick wallpaper?

Brick wallpaper is a roll wallcovering printed with a brick image. Traditional versions are pasted; peel and stick brick wallpaper has a pressure-sensitive adhesive (PSA) on the back and a release liner you peel off as you go. Most self adhesive brick wallpaper is PVC film between about 100 and 200 micron (4–8 mil) thick.

Three finishes matter for realism:

  • Flat print. Cheapest; relies on photographic shading. Fine for a brick bg in a shop window or a renter's bedroom wall seen from across the room.
  • Embossed or textured brick wallpaper. The film is pressed so mortar lines sit lower than the brick faces. Raking light then creates real shadows, which is what makes wallpaper that looks like brick convincing.
  • 3 dimensional brick wallpaper. Deeper embossing on thicker vinyl, sometimes foam-backed, giving a soft relief you can feel.

Our embossed 3D stacked-stone and brick wallpaper, for example, is PVC in 1.22 m × 50 m trade rolls with waterproof, moisture-proof and mould-proof properties. Brick contact paper on a thinner 100–200 micron PVC film also works on furniture, shelves and drawer fronts as well as walls.

Faux brick panels vs brick wallpaper: which looks more real?

Realism comes from three things: depth (shadows at the mortar joints), variation (no obvious repeat), and edges (how corners and outlets are finished).

FactorFaux brick wall panelsPeel and stick brick wallpaper
Depth and shadowReal relief; best for raking light and side viewsPrinted or lightly embossed; flatter under side light

The honest answer: at arm's length, deep polyurethane panels or thin brick veneer win. From two meters or more, under normal ceiling light, a good textured brick wallpaper is hard to tell apart from a painted brick wall, especially in white or grey.

Can you use faux brick panels on the exterior?

Yes, but only products rated for it. Exterior imitation brick panels and faux brick siding are usually high-density polyurethane, fiber cement or rigid PVC with UV stabilizers, fixed over a water-resistive barrier with screws and a starter strip, the same way as other siding. Faux brick panels exterior grades must tolerate freeze-thaw cycles and expansion of up to several millimeters per panel in summer heat.

Do not use brick wallpaper or interior hardboard panels outdoors. Self-adhesive PVC films are designed for interior walls at about 10–35 °C; sun, rain and temperature swings break down the adhesive and fade the print. For a real brick facade or brick facing for exterior walls, thin brick veneer or exterior brick veneer panels set in mortar are the durable option.

How do you make a faux brick accent wall look real?

A brick accent wall works best on one wall that already has a reason to be a feature: behind a bed, a sofa, a TV or a bar. A few rules make imitation brick far more convincing:

  • Use side lighting. Wall washers or a window to the side bring out embossed mortar lines.
  • Choose a realistic brick size. A standard modular brick face is about 2 1/4 × 7 5/8 in (57 × 194 mm). Oversized prints look fake instantly.
  • Stop at natural breaks. End the brick at a corner, a ceiling line or a timber trim, not mid-wall.
  • Avoid painting over seams. On panels, fill joints with color-matched caulk only along mortar lines.
  • Match the room. Exposed brick wallpaper suits industrial and loft schemes; whitewash brick suits farmhouse and Scandinavian rooms.

Faux brick backsplash and fireplace ideas

Faux brick backsplash for kitchen walls

A faux brick backsplash for kitchen walls is one of the most popular uses, especially white brick backsplash in kitchen designs and whitewash brick kitchen backsplash looks. Peel and stick brick backsplash film is waterproof PVC that wipes clean, but keep it at least 30 cm (12 in) from gas burners and follow the product's heat guidance. Behind a range, a stainless or tempered glass panel is safer.

Stacked stone backsplash and faux stone backsplash peel and stick films follow the same rules. They work well in rental kitchens where the landlord will not allow tile.

Faux brick for fireplace surrounds

False bricks for fireplace surrounds must respect clearance to combustibles. PVC wallpaper and plastic panels are combustible, so use them only on the chimney breast well above and beside the opening, where the wall stays at room temperature. For the hearth surround itself, use thin brick veneer or non-combustible stone.

How to install peel and stick brick wallpaper

Peel and stick brick tile and roll products install the same way. Allow two to three hours for a 3 × 2.5 m (10 × 8 ft) wall.

  1. Prepare the wall. Clean, dry, smooth painted drywall is ideal. New paint needs 2–4 weeks to cure. Fill holes and sand.
  2. Measure and plan. Measure height and width, add 5–10 cm per drop for trimming, and decide where the first full brick course will sit.
  3. Snap a plumb line. Draw a vertical line one roll width from the corner so the first drop is perfectly straight.
  4. Peel 30 cm of liner. Align the top edge, press lightly, then peel the liner progressively while smoothing down with a felt squeegee from the center outward.
  5. Match the pattern. Align the next drop on the mortar lines, overlapping or butting edges as the product specifies.
  6. Trim and finish. Trim at ceiling, baseboard and outlets with a sharp blade and straightedge. Press all edges firmly; a hairdryer on low helps embossed film conform.

White, grey or red brick wallpaper: which color works?

Color affects realism as much as texture does.

  • White brick for walls and faux white brick wall looks are the most forgiving. A painted brick wall has little color variation, so print limitations disappear. White brick peel and stick wallpaper suits small rooms and kitchens.
  • Grey brick wallpaper and grey and white brick wallpaper read as modern and industrial, and pair well with concrete wallpaper on adjacent walls.
  • Red brick wallpaper needs the best print quality, because real red brick has strong variation between bricks. Choose distressed brick wallpaper or rustic brick wallpaper with irregular mortar lines.
  • Stacked stone designs give a warmer, natural texture for living rooms, hotel lobbies and restaurants.

For retailers, installers and importers

If you sell brick wallpaper rolls or supply contractors, specify these points so samples and production match:

  • Film and thickness. PVC, with embossing depth and total thickness in micron.
  • Adhesive. Removable for rentals and retail DIY; permanent for commercial projects.
  • Format. 0.61 m × 3 m retail rolls for online and store sales; 0.61 m or 1.22 m × 50 m trade rolls for installers.
  • Performance grades. Waterproof, moisture-proof, mould-proof and fire-retardant options.
  • Packaging. Carton, printed sleeve or private label.

Stock designs ship from 1 roll in 7–10 days; custom colorways and private-label packaging start at 100 rolls with 15–25 days lead time. Our rental apartment turnover case study shows how brick wallpaper in retail rolls is used for quick, removable updates, and the full wallpaper and floor film range lists every brick and stone design.

Good to know

Frequently Asked Questions

Do faux brick wall panels look real?

Good faux brick wall panels look real from a normal viewing distance, especially polyurethane panels with 1 to 1.5 inches of molded depth that cast true shadows at the mortar joints. Cheaper hardboard 4x8 sheets have shallow embossing and a visible repeat, so they read as imitation up close unless you rotate panels and hide the seams.

Is peel and stick brick wallpaper removable?

Most peel and stick brick wallpaper uses a removable pressure-sensitive adhesive that peels off cleanly from fully cured, painted drywall, which is why it is popular in rentals. Warm stubborn areas with a hairdryer and pull slowly at a low angle. Avoid applying it to fresh paint, bare plaster or flat matte paint, which can lift when the film is removed.

Can you put faux brick panels on the outside of a house?

You can, but only with panels rated for exterior use, such as high-density polyurethane, fiber cement or UV-stabilized rigid PVC faux brick siding. They are installed like siding over a water-resistive barrier, with allowance for thermal expansion. Interior hardboard panels and self-adhesive brick wallpaper will fail outdoors because of sun, rain and temperature swings.

Can you use faux brick for a kitchen backsplash?

Yes. Peel and stick brick backsplash film and PVC faux brick panels are waterproof and wipe clean, which makes them practical behind sinks and counters. Keep plastic products at least 30 cm (12 in) away from gas burners and follow the manufacturer's heat guidance. Directly behind a range, a stainless or tempered glass panel is the safer choice.

Are faux brick panels safe around a fireplace?

Plastic faux brick panels and PVC brick wallpaper are combustible, so they should not be used on the fireplace surround or within the clearance to combustibles set by local building codes. Use them only on the chimney breast well above and beside the opening, where the wall stays at room temperature, and use thin brick veneer or stone around the firebox.

How big are faux brick wall panels?

The most common size is 4 by 8 feet, or 1.22 by 2.44 meters, which covers 32 square feet per sheet. Polyurethane brick veneer panels are often about 2 by 4 feet, XPE foam brick tiles are typically around 70 by 77 cm, and peel and stick brick wallpaper usually comes in 0.61 meter wide rolls.

Which is cheaper, brick wallpaper or faux brick panels?

Brick wallpaper is usually the cheapest way to get a brick look, often costing a fraction of faux brick panels per square foot, and it needs only a knife, straightedge and squeegee to install. Faux brick panels cost more for materials and labor but offer real texture, better impact resistance and exterior-rated options.
