Ordering Custom Die-Cut Vinyl Stickers: A Checklist for Brands and Print Shops

Key takeaways

  • Supply vector artwork (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) with a separate cut-line layer and at least 1.5–3 mm bleed beyond the cut path; raster files need 300 dpi at final size.
  • Choose material by service life: 80–100 micron white gloss PVC with laminate for 2–3 years outdoors, clear or matte PVC for indoor branding, removable adhesive for surfaces that must stay clean.
  • Die-cut means the sticker is cut through film and liner to the shape; kiss-cut means only the film is cut and the sticker sits on a square backing sheet.
  • Custom die-cut sticker orders run 15–25 days from artwork approval; specify quantities per design, sheet or individual format, and Incoterm (FOB, CIF, CFR, EXW or DDP) on the purchase order.
  • Approve a physical pre-production sample or a digital proof with a cut-line overlay before mass production to avoid shape and colour disputes.

Ordering custom die-cut vinyl stickers goes smoothly when you send print-ready vector artwork with a clear cut line, specify the material and laminate for the intended service life, and confirm quantity, format and Incoterm on a single purchase order. Most problems in sticker sourcing trace back to missing bleed, an unspecified adhesive, or a shape that was never proofed. This checklist covers each stage from artwork to delivery so your first production run arrives as expected.

Step 1: Prepare artwork that a factory can use

The artwork file is the single biggest source of delay. Ask your designer for the following before you send anything to the factory:

  • Vector format: AI, EPS, PDF or SVG. Fonts converted to outlines or embedded.
  • Cut line on its own layer: Name it “CutContour” or “Dieline” and set it as a 100% spot colour with no fill. The cut line should be a single closed path.
  • Bleed: Extend background colours and images 1.5–3 mm beyond the cut line. Die-cutting tolerance is industry-typically ±0.5 mm, and bleed hides that variation.
  • Safe zone: Keep text and important elements at least 2 mm inside the cut line.
  • Colour mode: CMYK for print. If you have Pantone references, list them separately; the factory will match as closely as the print process allows.
  • Raster images: 300 dpi at final printed size. Screenshots and web images at 72 dpi will print soft.
  • Dimensions: State the final sticker size in millimetres. “3 inch” leaves ambiguity about which axis it refers to.

If you supply a plain logo and ask the factory to add a contour, say so explicitly and specify the offset (a 2–3 mm white or clear border around the artwork is the usual request).

Step 2: Choose the material and adhesive

Custom stickers are printed and cut from the same PVC films used for plotter cutting vinyl. The Graphic & Signage Films range covers the common combinations.

Material Thickness Finish Typical use
White gloss PVC 80–100 micron (3–4 mil) Glossy General branded stickers, packaging, laptops
White matte PVC 80–100 micron Matte Premium packaging, stationery, low-glare labels
Clear PVC 80–100 micron Glossy Window decals, glass jars, “no-label” look
Removable white PVC 80–100 micron Glossy or matte Wall decals, rental spaces, promotional campaigns
Heavy-duty white PVC 120–200 micron (5–8 mil) Glossy Equipment labels, outdoor bumper stickers, floor markers

Adhesive choice follows the same logic as plain cutting vinyl: permanent for anything that must stay for years, removable for surfaces that must return to their original state. If the stickers will go on textured or low-energy plastics, choose the permanent grade and a slightly thicker film to resist edge lift.

Print method is usually eco-solvent or UV inkjet for short and medium runs, and screen printing for very large single-colour runs. Confirm which method the factory will use; it affects colour vibrancy and outdoor durability.

Step 3: Decide on lamination

Lamination is a clear film applied over the print. It protects the ink from abrasion, moisture and UV, and it changes the surface feel.

  • Gloss laminate: Highest colour depth, easy to clean, industry-typical 2–3 years outdoors.
  • Matte laminate: Low glare, hides fingerprints, softer look.
  • No laminate: Suitable for indoor use and short-term promotions. Cheaper, but the print can scratch and fade outdoors within months.

For any sticker that will be used outdoors, on vehicles, water bottles or drinkware, specify lamination. For indoor packaging labels, unlaminated stock is often adequate and saves cost.

Step 4: Specify the cut format

The term “die-cut” is used loosely, so define what you mean on the order:

  • Die-cut (through-cut): Cut through vinyl and liner. The sticker is delivered as an individual shape with a backing the same shape. Best for retail singles and hand-outs.
  • Kiss-cut: Vinyl is cut but the liner is not. Stickers sit on a square or rectangular backing, easy to peel, and can be supplied in sheets with several designs.
  • Rolls: Stickers kiss-cut on a continuous liner and wound on a core, for label applicators or high-volume hand application. State the core diameter (usually 76 mm / 3 in), unwind direction and maximum roll diameter.
  • Sheets: Kiss-cut on A4, A5 or custom sheets. State how many stickers per sheet and whether the sheet has a printed header.

Also state the corner radius for rectangular stickers and whether you want a split-back (slit in the liner) for easier peeling on larger die-cuts.

Step 5: Confirm quantities, MOQ and lead time

Shanghai Mars Industrial produces custom sticker orders on an OEM basis. Practical numbers to plan around:

  • MOQ: 100 rolls or the equivalent sheet quantity per design for custom work. Stock plain cutting vinyl is available from one roll.
  • Lead time: 15–25 days from approval of the final proof or pre-production sample. Stock materials ship in 7–10 days.
  • Per-design quantities: List each design with its own quantity. Mixed-design orders are common, but each design counts separately toward setup.
  • Overs and unders: Industry practice allows a small variance in delivered quantity on printed goods; agree the tolerance on the purchase order.

Reprints of an approved design are faster because artwork, cut file and colour targets are already on file.

Step 6: Approve a proof before production

Never skip proofing. A digital proof should show the printed artwork, the cut line as a coloured overlay, the final dimensions and the material name. For colour-critical brand work, request a physical pre-production sample; it takes a few days but confirms colour, finish, lamination and cut accuracy on the actual film.

Check the sample for:

  • Cut line following the shape without visible offset
  • Bleed fully covering the edge (no white slivers)
  • Colour against your Pantone or brand reference under daylight
  • Laminate free of bubbles or silvering
  • Clean peel from the liner, no ink lifting
  • Adhesion on your real substrate after 24 hours

The factory operates under ISO 9001 and ISO 14001 and can supply SGS test reports for the base films; see the quality page for what is inspected at each stage.

Step 7: Packaging, shipping and Incoterms

Retail-ready packaging is available through the OEM/ODM service: printed backing cards, poly bags, header cards, barcodes and branded cartons. Specify pack quantities (for example 50 stickers per bag, 20 bags per carton) so the factory can plan.

Shipping options depend on order size:

  • Express courier (DDP): For sample runs and small quantities. Single landed price, fastest, most expensive per kilogram.
  • Air freight (CIF or CFR): For medium orders where speed matters.
  • Sea freight (FOB Shanghai or Ningbo): For pallet and container quantities. Cheapest per unit, 3–6 weeks transit depending on destination.
  • EXW: If you have your own forwarder collecting from the factory.

Payment terms are T/T, L/C, Western Union and Trade Assurance. For first orders, a deposit with balance before shipment is standard.

Frequently Asked Questions

What file format do I need to send for custom die-cut stickers?

Vector files (AI, EPS, PDF or SVG) are preferred, with the cut line on its own named layer and fonts converted to outlines. Raster artwork should be 300 dpi at final print size with at least 1.5 mm bleed.

What is the difference between die-cut and kiss-cut stickers?

Die-cut stickers are cut through both the vinyl and the backing liner so the finished sticker follows the shape of the design. Kiss-cut stickers have only the vinyl cut, leaving them on a square or rectangular backing that is easier to peel and to pack in sets.

How long do custom die-cut vinyl stickers take to produce?

Customised orders from Shanghai Mars Industrial typically ship 15–25 days after artwork approval, plus transit time. Stock cutting vinyl in plain colours ships in 7–10 days.

Are the stickers waterproof and UV resistant?

Printed PVC stickers with a gloss or matte laminate are water resistant and industry-typically rated 2–3 years outdoors. Unlaminated stickers are suitable for indoor use or short-term outdoor promotions.

What is the minimum order for custom stickers?

Custom die-cut sticker production starts from 100 rolls or the equivalent sheet quantity per design; stock plain cutting vinyl has a one-roll minimum. Ask for a quotation with your exact size and quantity.

Can the stickers carry my own brand and packaging?

Yes. OEM and private-label service covers printed backing sheets, header cards, poly bags and cartons, so stickers can ship retail-ready under your brand.
